Thinking with AI Using COAT

Have you noticed that the better you prompt, the better you think?

It’s one of the quiet revolutions happening right now—beneath the surface of the AI boom. Everyone’s talking about productivity, but what’s more interesting to me is how prompting is reshaping how we understand and communicate our ideas.

Because when we prompt well, we think better.

That’s the real power of working with AI. It’s not just about writing faster or automating tasks—it’s about learning to be more precise, more thoughtful, and more intentional with our language. Prompting is not just a technical skill. It’s a thinking skill.

And that’s what Level One prompting is all about.

COAT: A Framework for Smarter Prompting
Over the past year, I’ve taught thousands of professionals how to prompt more effectively, and I’ve seen a pattern emerge in the people who really get it.

They aren’t just learning how to use AI. They’re learning how to organize their thoughts in a way that makes their thinking more powerful—with or without an AI in the loop.

To support that shift, I’ve developed a simple framework called COAT, which stands for:

Context – What’s the situation or background?
Objective – What result do you want?
Action – What should the AI do?
Tone – What style or format do you want?

When you wrap your prompt in COAT, the AI can “wear” your intention. It’s like giving your idea a tailored outfit—something that helps it walk into the world with clarity and confidence.

Even more importantly: using COAT forces you to clarify what you’re asking.

Prompting as a Thinking Practice
There’s a moment, right before I hit “enter” on a prompt, when I ask myself:

“Is this clear? Do I really know what I’m asking for?”

And that moment has become a mirror for my own mind. It invites reflection. It challenges me to be precise. And it makes me a better thinker—even when I’m not using AI.

Prompting well means structuring ideas, defining goals, and seeing patterns. These are the same skills that help us write better software, lead stronger teams, and model complex systems.

So if you’ve ever felt unsure about prompting—if it’s been hit or miss, or if you’re still not sure what “good prompting” even means—I want to invite you into this first level of working with AI: not automation, but alignment.

You’re Invited: Lead Smarter with AI (Free Webinar)
This Friday (July 11, 2025), I’m hosting a free, hands-on webinar called Lead Smarter with AI. We’ll explore the COAT framework in more detail and look at how prompting can become a leadership skill—one that improves thinking, decision-making, and communication across your team.

If you are a developer, a project manager, or a curious leader, this session will give you a clear, practical starting point to begin prompting with more purpose and clarity.

Sessions are open for July 11 and August 14, 2025. More sessions coming…

A Larger Vision
This quarter’s focus is on what I call Level One prompting for context and clarity, but there’s something deeper we’re walking toward.

AI isn’t just a tool—it’s a mirror, a sparring partner, a co-creator. And as our relationship with these tools matures, we’re being invited into a new way of thinking about intelligence, collaboration, and meaning.

I’ll be sharing more of that in future essays and videos. But for now, I invite you to take the first step: practice thinking with AI. Not just using it, but learning from the process of clarifying your own mind.

Because the better we think, the better our prompts.

And the better our prompts, the more powerful our results.

Let’s start there.

David
